Gum Disease Treatment

If you suffer from discolored, swollen or infected gums, you may be experiencing beginning stage gum disease. This common dental problem develops when gingivitis goes untreated. At McAllen Dental Care, we provide gum disease treatment for our patients who need to manage periodontal disease symptoms.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an oral health condition that results when gums recede, and deep pockets form around teeth, leading to tooth migration and eventually, tooth loss. As gum disease progresses to advanced stages, stabilizing gums pull away from teeth and create pockets. These hidden spaces harbor food debris and bacteria, leading to decay and gum infection. Sometimes, no symptoms are present until the damage is irreversible; common signs of gum disease include:

  • Bloody gums
  • Foul breath
  • Red and swollen gums
  • Gum infection
  • Receding gum line
  • Loose teeth
  • Bone loss
  • Gaps or spacing issues
  • Teeth sensitivity
  • Gums pulled away from teeth

Gum Disease Treatment

Our periodontist uses both teeth scaling and root planning to manage late stage gum disease.

  • Tooth Scaling: During gum disease treatment, special instruments are used to remove all the built-up plaque, tartar, bacteria and infection from below the gum line, and from the surrounding teeth and gums.
  • Root Planing: After scaling is completed, the infected roots are smoothed to allow the gums to attach more securely to teeth and heal better. This process reduces the risk of once again developing deep pockets and gum infection.
